Using the Internet for Instruction
Safety On the Internet - A Student Guide for Safety
At the start of the school year, my first formal technology lesson is about Internet Safety. As a middle school teacher, the lesson was directed more toward sending or receiving email, blogging, texting, meeting "students" from the Internet in person and posting videos and photos.
The Student Zone is geared toward students who are in fourth through sixth grade (tweens) and seventh through twelfth grades (teens). The reason I chose this demographic is because their reading skills will allow to refer to this material with little or no assistance from an adult regarding vocabulary. There are videos and handouts are linked.
By viewing the videos, online content from http://www.netsmartz.org/internetsafety and the printable materials, students will receive the information they need to be safe online and to use good judgement when they are left to their own devices. The videos below address each topic area so if the students are not inclined to look at the linked material, they have some information when they are in an online or digital environment.
