Using the Internet for Instruction - Student Internet Safety
- Your Name: Jeanne Searfoorce
- Lesson Title: Internet Safety Vocabulary With Web 2.0
- Introduction: Students will use www.pixton.com, badguypatrol.ca and netsmartzkids.org to learn about Internet terms in a fun and interesting way.
- Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Grades 1, 2 and 3
- Objectives: The main objective is for students to learn Internet vocabulary so they understand how the Internet functions so they can be safe online.
- Standards Addressed:
- Relative Advantage: Students will learn two robust Web 2.0 tools they can use for other classes, they will have a fantastic technical vocabulary and will learn about Internet safety.
- Timeline: Six weeks.
- Materials: A computer and connection to the Internet.
- Grouping Strategies: The computer lab has 25 computers. Each student will use their own computer. Students may exchange ideas and help each other but their work must be original.
- Learning Activities:
- Student will be introduced to the Internet.
- Students will view a comic made using www.pixton.com,and will take the Internet Safety Pledge as a class by reciting the pledge line by line after the teacher.
- Students will learn the different terms and will repeat them aloud.
- Students will also learn the meanings of the terms.
- Students will watch some of the videos on netsmartzkids.org. The students should watch the following videos: Bad Netiquette Stinks, Be Safer Online, Beat The Tricks, Know The Rules, The Password Rap and Don't Open That File.
- Students will complete the short quiz using www.badguypatrol.ca and can print a certificate when they successfully complete the quiz.
- Students will locate my blog and will log into www.pixton.com to create a six frame comic with six words they learned from the videos and they can use the documents below for help.
- Assessment: Students will be assessed by creating the six frames, using six different characters, changing the backgrounds and adding a bubble with information about the term they are using.
- Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students with special needs will be given a list and instructed which terms to use for their comic strip. Students will also be given additional time to complete the lesson.
